Sixty days and counting until America selects it's next president. My vote won't count for much, but I'm protesting and considering voting for myself, because neither candidate has told me what I want to hear as yet. So what do I want to hear? Well, if either candidate (or members of their party) happens across this post, here is what would sway my decision:
- First, I want to know that there is an end to the recession in sight. I want to know that prices will come down, wages will go up, and that the dollar will mean something again.
- I want the Iraqi money train to stop. The argument that we "owe" the Iraqi people restitution only carries so much water. How much would they have lost if we had left Hussein in power? No, the time has come for us to leave and stop dropping money into the pit. They need to stand on their own merit.
- I want to hear that we will be reducing America's dependence on oil, period. Not foreign oil, but oil in general. I want to hear that we will be exploring alternate energy sources and finding new and better ways to provide for our energy needs; methods that don't rape and destroy the environment. I understand that this isn't going to happen overnight, but the time of "that's something for future consideration" is long past. The time to be working towards that future was yesterday!
- I want English to be our official national language! It's fine that people speak other languages; I, myself, am multilingual. But when I go to France, I learn to speak French; I don't expect that the French learn English to benefit me. If you are going to live here, learn to speak English!
- I want to know the candidates' stance on illegal immigration! I want to know that people who are here without authorization will be deported and not allowed back in! I want to know that our borders will be closed to those without proper visas and credentials!
- I want to know where my money is going! Every month, I lose roughly one-third of my paycheck to taxes and insurance. And yet, following Hurricane Katrina, we (and thousands of others) had to fight tooth-and-nail to get insurance to pay off what we had been paying to protect for years! I want to know that my taxes are going to projects that benefit me, and that insurance will pay what they are supposed to when needed most!
- Finally, I want to know that we are one nation. Not under God, but one nation! I want a candidate who is going to keep their religion out of my government. If you are a devout person, that's fine, but I am not electing God to run the country, I'm electing you!

Obama
Obama
McCain
Neither (McCain coauthored the immigration reform package that he denounced in the primaries and ignores now -- go figure)
Both (saying the right things about transparency, but one side has eight years of total non-transparency, so consider that), and
Obama (if the Palin pick doesn't scare you straight in that regard...)
Make of that what you will. Of course, Mississippi is scarlet red when picking Presidents, so...there it is.
